MONUMENTAL LLADRO "DOLPHINS"#6436 PORCELAIN SCULPTURE Available for purchase is a monumental Lladro sculpture titled "Dolphins" (#6436). The Spanish name for this piece is "Delfines". This large porcelain figurine depicts a pod of 4 dolphins playfully jumping out of the water over cresting ocean waves. This figurine was sculpted by Francisco Catalá and has a glaze finish. It was originally issued in 1997 and retired in 2004. This Lladro figurine is HUGE and quite heavy. It measures about 21 1/4" long, 6" wide, and 8" tall. The underside of the base has the current Lladro mark that was first used in 1990. This figurine last retailed for $1,200 new and has a current retail value of $1,150. This large piece comes with a wooden base and its original box with paperwork. I purchased this Lladro sculpture at a recent estate sale. It was originally purchased from a Lladro retailer on Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills.If you're not already familiar with the Lladro company, it was founded during the 1950's in Valencia, Spain by three brothers. Juan, Jose, and Vicente Lladro created their own formula for porcelain paste and refined the production process. After studying at the Valencia School of Arts & Crafts, they started producing figurines in a backyard kiln and are now famous for creating some of the best porcelain in the world. Born into a humble farming family, the brothers Juan, José and Vicente decided to dedicate their free time to making ceramics as a means of improving their prospects for the future. They enrolled in the Valencia School of Arts and Crafts, where Juan and José studied drawing and painting, while the youngest brother, Vicente, took up sculpture.In order to put their new knowledge into practice, they built a Moorish-style kiln in the patio of their parents' home. As their experiments became increasingly successful, they began manufacturing and selling their first ceramic flowers on the local market.
